Franz Wohlfahrt, Op. 38, “Easiest Elementary Method for Violin,” Revised for D-major Beginners by Charles Heiden.

The revision in 2 books makes a rapprochement to serve beginners whose start in a heterogeneous string class at school has been focused in D-major. Bk.1 transposes Wohlfahrt’s initial C-major items to D, but then a 3-tetrachord [major, minor, Phrygian] approach bridges to C major in order to follow Wohlfahrt through his no. 63. 27 interpolations by Heiden make the rapprochement, along the way adding theory from a string perspective.

Bk. 2 follows Wohlfahrt from his 64 through 114, the end of Op.38. Within 1st position the master teacher from Leipzig explores the major and minor keys G, D, e, A, a, F, d, Bb, g, Eb – the upper half of the circle of 5ths -- treating a wide spectrum of topics: 1) dynamics related to bowing layout – how to get to the correct part of the bow; 2) 16th notes; 3) ties ; 4) syncopations; 5) triplets and triple rhythms; 6) melodic minor; 7) 8th notes -- detache vs. slurred; 8) slurred triplets vs. the dotted 8th--16th figure: slurred, linked, and Viotti fashion; 9) bowing layout; 10) the interpolation of martelé strokes; 11) cantabile; 12) the anchor finger in rapid groups. Theory topics include the circle of 5ths, key structure, signatures, scales, intervals – their nomenclature and fingerboard geography, the three tetrachords now mounted from 1st finger as a foundation for later work in higher positions, chord spelling, arpeggios looking forward to the system of Carl Flesch, and the making of models as tools for learning and practice. The musicianly 2nd violin parts that Wohlfahrt composed for the teacher are all retained. It is so critically important for the teacher, violin-in-hand, to model good playing! But as in Bk. 1, Bk. 2 adds a cello part ad libitum. It may be omitted, performed as part of a string trio, or -- if read with the violin 2 part as right-hand – it makes the left hand of a piano accompaniment. Wohlfahrt’s "Longer Exercises" [duets for pupil and teacher] are retained unchanged

    Heiden’s rapprochement, Book 1 of Wohlfahrt’s Op. 38... $19.95

    Heiden’s rapprochement, Book 2 of Wohlfahrt’s Op. 38... $19.95
